Submarine is about a Welsh teenage boy named Oliver. He has many things on his mind; losing his virginity before his 16th birthday and holding his family together. He sets out to charm his classmate Jordana whilst trying to help his father, a depressed marine biologist, prevent his mother from falling for a spiritual guru who has moved in down the road.
This film was funny whilst combating with issues such as divorce and finding a place in society. I enjoyed it a lot, from the witty, blunt comments of Oliver, to the mysterious Jordana, and the secrecy of Oliver's new neighbour. I think what brought the film to life were the use of camera shots and movements, lighting, non-digetic sound and overall atmosphere.
The opening alone is beautiful, with the contrast of the yellow of Oliver's room with the blue of the outside light, the chunky text, and idyllic setting of a rural town by a beach.
